COLLEGE: Stackhouse came to the NBA as an early entry candidate after two outstanding seasons at North Carolina. As a sophomore he was named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press and College Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated, as well the Most Outstanding Player of the Southeast Regional in the 1995 NCAA Tournament. As a high school senior, Stackhouse averaged 24 points and 8 rebounds per game and led Oak Hill Academy to the mythical high school national championship in 1993, then was named Most Valuable Player of the McDonald's High School All-America Game. In his first season at North Carolina, Stackhouse joined Phil Ford and Sam Perkins as the only Tar Heels freshmen to win the Everett Case Award as MVP of the ACC Tournament. 1995-1996: A member of the NBA All-Rookie team, Stackhouse was Philadelphia's leading scorer with 19.2 points per game, tops among all NBA rookies. He also averaged 3.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game, and his 278 total assists topped the team. His 1,384 points were a rookie franchise record, erasing Clarence Weatherspoon's 1,280, and he scored 20 points or more a team-high 31 times. He appeared in 72 games, starting all but one, but had his season cut short by a fractured right thumb suffered April 5 against Detroit, costing him the final eight games of the year. Stackhouse was the NBA's Rookie of the Month for March, the first Sixer to win the award since its inception in 1981-82. He averaged 22.3 points, 4.5 assists, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals in 15 games that month, getting 20 or more points 11 times and 30 or more three times--32 against the Clippers on March 10, a career-high tying 34 against Toronto on March 12 and 31 against Chicago on March 18. Stackhouse began his pro career on a high note, scoring 27 points in the season opener against Washington on Nov. 3. That was the most points by an NBA player in his first game since Willie Anderson got 30 for San Antonio in 1988. He got a career-high 34 points against Sacramento on Nov. 7, a double-double of 22 points and 10 assists against Houston on Nov. 22 and averaged 22.7 points per game in nine outings from Nov. 29 to Dec. 13, including 32 points at Toronto on Dec. 1 and 21 points and 10 rebounds against Dallas on De.c 6. His slowest stretch came in late January, when he shot just 30 percent but still averaged 16.8 points per game in a six-game period.

1996-1997: Stackhouse emjoyed a solid second season in the NBA, teaming with flashy rookie Allen Iverson in one of the NBA's most exciting and productive backcourts. He averaged 20.7 points per game to rank 15th in the NBA and teamed with Iverson to post 44.2 ppg. Stackhouse also contributed 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.15 steals in 39.1 minute sper game and sank 102 three-pointers. He ranked second on the team in minutes, steals and treys and third in assists. He played in 81 games, missing a game on Feb. 16 to witness the birth of his son, Jaye Alexander. He led the 76ers in scoring 26 times, tallying a career-high 39 points in a 115-113 loss at Charlotte on April 5. That was one of nine games in which he scored 30 points or more.
